ISTEP Vocabulary

OVERVIEW: You will learn what some words in ISTEP mean.
Author's Purpose- the reason for which something exists or is done, made, used, etc.
Inference- any process of reasoning from premises to a conclusion
Cause- a person or thing that acts, happens, or exists in such a way that some specific thing happens as a result
Effect- something that is produced by an agency or cause
Compare- to examine in order to note similarities and differences
Contrast- to compare in order to show unlikeness or differences
Fact- something that actually exists
Opinion- a belief or judgment
Main Idea- main subject in a paragraph or
Introduction- begging
Body- middle
Conclusion- end
Genre- category
Folk Tale- a tale or legend originating and traditional among a people or folk
Expository- detailed sentence
Figurative Language- describe something by comparing it with something else
Narrative- a story or account of events
Informational- knowledge gained through study
Synonym- a word that has the same meaning as another word
Antonym- a word that means the opposite of of another word
Drawing Conclusions- information that is implied or inferred
Characterization- to attribute character
Conflict- to come into collision or disagreement
Resolution-a resolve or determination
Author's Perspective- a visible scene, especially one extending to a distance
Metaphor- a description not using like or as
Simile- a description using like or as
Stanza- a poem using four or more lines
